Escribolt

Escribolt is proud to make its desktop client source code public and visible. To protect our project's viability and prevent third parties from commercializing or reselling Escribolt under closed licenses, we utilize a protective licensing model.

Escribolt Desktop License

Our desktop application is licensed under the Business Source License (BSL 1.1):

  • Free for Individuals: The code is public, and anyone can inspect, modify, and build the application for personal or internal business productivity, including Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) use.
  • Commercial Limits: You are legally prohibited from rebranding, commercially distributing, or charging others for access/use of the application.

On June 5, 2030, the BSL automatically converts to the fully open-source GNU General Public License v3.0 (GPLv3). See license here.

Rights of the End User

As an end user of our application, you retain the following rights:

  • Code Visibility: Users can inspect the client-side code to verify Escribolt's strict local privacy boundary (no telemetry, no backdoor tracking).
  • Personal Compilations: Individual users are encouraged to compile the desktop client from source for personal use on their own macOS devices.
  • No Unlicensed Rebranding: Rebranding the Escribolt desktop client and distributing it commercially (e.g. on app stores) without a commercial agreement is strictly forbidden.
